KMS Partners LLC, is an exclusive partnership within the
Coldwell Banker Westport-Riverside real estate office.

This week, KMS Partners profiles our real estate professional and co-founder, Laurie Morris.

When Laurie Morris’ father got out of the Coast Guard, he joined Shell Oil because he was tired of traveling. But for the next couple of decades, the company moved him and his family all over the country. She and her six siblings learned to be resilient, resourceful, and to make friends anywhere.

After marriage, Laurie spent 30 years in Weston. “I got into real estate because if I couldn’t move, I wanted to be around people who do,” she laughs.

Her first career — until her children were born — was with Citibank in New York. For years, Laurie had a standing offer to return to the company. (She speaks French, German and Portuguese, making her very marketable for international clients.) But when her youngest child was 11, a friend suggested she try real estate.

Laurie knew everyone in Weston, and had been involved in nearly every organization there. Her long list of volunteer efforts includes chair of Weston’s Commission for the Elderly (before she was 40!), president of the Weston Young Womans Club, board member of United Way and Aspetuck Country Club, and co-chair of Weston’s Board of Assessment Appeals.

Laurie quickly became one of the town’s top realtors. She worked alongside Sheila Keenan, under the legendary Phyllis Hillebrand. When that firm was bought by Coldwell Banker — as was Riverside Shavell — Laurie, Sheila and Wade Shavell joined forces. (Laurie Morris is the “M” in KMS Partners.)

In 2007, she and her husband relocated to Florida. She got her real estate license there, and quickly established herself as a force. But, Laurie admits, “the market there is not as interesting as here. There are lots of similar houses.”
Fairfield County, by comparison, boasts “so many unique properties, with interesting character.” She also appreciates the varied ages of homebuyers and sellers here.

Since returning to KMS Partners in June, Laurie has jumped right back into full-time work. Spare time is spent with her three children and eight grandchildren, all of whom live nearby.

Coming back to KMS has been a joy. “I trained Karen Scott,” Laurie says with pride. “It’s so satisfying to see how she’s grown into such a great agent.” Rejoining Sheila is fun. As for David Weber: “I worked for years to get him here,” Laurie notes.

“I’ve never seen the synergy of all seven partners duplicated anywhere else,” she adds.
Every KMS realtor has their own style. Laurie describes herself as “laid back. I enjoy counseling people, with a consultative approach. Buyers and sellers today have so much more information than when I started. But they still need counseling to understand everything at their fingertips.”
It’s hard, Laurie says, for clients to “catch all the nuances. You can draw the wrong conclusions, unless you’ve got someone with experience to guide you.”

For her, the rewards of real estate come from “helping people achieve their goals and dreams. An older person may want to get out of a big house, but feel overwhelmed. A young family coming out of the city needs help too.”
Laurie recalls a man who came out from the city by himself with six-week-old twins. “It was so much fun helping them find a place where he and his wife and the little boys could put down roots,” she says.

Laurie sold them their second home too. Now the twins are in college. They all continue to keep in touch.

“I love meeting new people, and reconnecting with old friends,” Laurie reiterates. “It’s the best!”
