Winter is still upon us…here are some activities to get you through.

Whether you’ve just arrived from the South or elsewhere in New England, you’re probably wondering if there’s any way to amuse yourself when it’s cold and snowy here.

The answer is: lots!

The most basic – and traditional – winter fun is sledding and tobogganing. Some of our favorite spots include Winslow Park (corner of Post Road and North Compo), which the rest of the year is filled with dogs and their walkers; the Birchwood Country Club golf course on Kings Highway South; the hills behind Staples High School and in front of Greens Farms Elementary School, and the especially steep slopes at Fairfield University.

Another quintessential winter activity is ice skating. Longshore Club Park is home to a fantastic outdoor rink, run by the Westport PAL. Just yards away from Long Island Sound, it’s popular with expert skaters and novices; families, teens and tweens eager to escape their parents, even hockey fans (the Staples High boys and girls teams play games there). The staff is friendly, helpful, and quick to clear the ice after every snowfall.

Other favorite spots include ponds like Nash’s (Woodside Avenue) and Bulkley (North Bulkley). Parking is limited though, and you skate at your own risk.

Two hearty outdoor activities are cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Popular spots to strap ‘em on, explore the terrain and work up an appetite include the Longshore Club Park golf course, Winslow Park, Sherwood Island State Park, Devil’s Den in Weston, and many Aspetuck Land Trust sites like Trout Brook (also in Weston).

Looking for something slightly less strenuous (and slower paced)? How about a winter stroll at Longshore, Sherwood Island or Compo Beach. The roads are often plowed, the crowds are far thinner than the rest of the year – and the views are stunning.

Speaking of Longshore, two paddle tennis courts get plenty of use, in all kinds of weather. Paddle players are a hardy bunch.

Newcomers are attracted to Westport for many reasons. Winter fun may not have been on your short list. But don’t wait long to try these out!
